The occasional shopping trip is a must. The low cost of living in Kern County means your dollar goes farther, and there are plenty of local retailers anxious to show you just how much of a bargain we really are.
Bakersfield is the central hub for shopping. The growing population has made the area attractive to major retailers. Macy's, JC Penney, Abercrombie and Fitch, World Market, Pier One are all here, along with Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Costco and others. In addition to the national stores, a host of local proprietors can give you that personal attention you deserve.
Bakersfield's largest and most established shopping area is the Valley Plaza Mall. Its 140 shops make this enclosed shopping destination the largest indoor mall in the San Joaquin Valley. It includes five major department stores, a food court with interior dining under the Sky Dome or patio dining (complete with overhead fans and a misting system for those hot summer days). Family restrooms, lounge areas and an adjacent 16-screen movie theater complete the package.
Convenience is important, so the East Hills Mall is the perfect place to shop for residents of Bakersfield's north and east sides. You'll find a variety of specialty stores to choose from. A comfortable indoor setting surrounds many of the shops. This area is home to Gottschalks/Harris, Mervyns, Target, Wal-Mart to name a few. There is also a 10-screen United Artists Theater for your entertainment pleasure.

On the opposite side of town is The Marketplace, offering quaint eating establishments in the midst of a diverse shopping experience. Its southwest locations make it easily accessible from the Seven Oaks, Stockdale and Laurel Glen areas. Moviegoers will appreciate the 14-screen Edwards Cinema Multiplex. Music lovers can enjoy " Concerts By The Fountain " every Thursday evening throughout the summer.

Also in the southwest is the Stockdale Fashion Plaza. This outdoor mall of 24 stores is brimming with shopping experiences, Mediterranean-American dining and fine wines. If you're looking for jewelry, clothing, or gourmet dining, you'll find it here.
Got a yen for antiques? There are many shops to choose from in Bakersfield's downtown area or on famous "H" Street, where turn-of-the century bungalows have been turned into delightful boutiques. You can find many one-of-a-kind antiques within a leisurely walking distance, and enjoy one of several charming dining experiences along the way.
