Kern County is ideally located for those who like to travel.
California's third largest county, Kern is larger than the state of Hawaii - or Vermont, Delaware and Rhode Island combined for that matter. This great expanse ranges from the Southern San Joaquin Valley, across the lower Sierras and into the Mojave Desert. There's plenty to explore, from Red Rock Canyon State Park and the Kern River Valley to the eerie Trona Pinnacles, right in your back yard.
And that's just the beginning. This is the hub of transportation for Central California with two of the state's major north-south arteries and the valley's only east-west thoroughfare stretching across Kern. View Map/Travel Distances

Much of Kern County is just a two-hour drive, or less, from the hustle and bustle of downtown Los Angeles. Residents on the desert side can reach Las Vegas in little more than three hours (add another hour from the valley), and California's central coast is just 2 and a half hours from Bakersfield. Kern County is also within an easy day trip of the San Francisco Bay Area, Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
If you don't want to drive yourself, Kern County is a major transportation hub. From Bakersfield you can connect to flights in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix and Houston via United, America West and Continental airlines. United also flies passengers from Ridgecrest to Los Angeles.
Rail service connects Bakersfield to all points north, and buses link to Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and the coast. Buses also service the desert with connections in all directions.
Whatever your plans, whether you're looking for an interesting place to live or a base from which to launch your excursions, Kern County is still the place to be.
